The first time I really recall it taking place was on the subway. I was about three, sitting on my mother’s lap and clinging to my old, ratty doll which I carried everywhere.
“What’s wrong wiff that lady, Mama?” I asked, tilting my head with a concerted frown. One pudgy finger pointed in the direction of an old woman sitting in the corner of the car, stooped over a carpet bag, eyes drooping half-shut. “Why’s she all blue?”
